Looking for the best bakeries in the GTA? We’ve rounded up five must-visit spots across the Greater Toronto Area. Each one specializes in a different baked treat — so no matter what you’re craving, there’s a perfect pick for you.
1. Bread: Brodflour, Liberty Village
Brodflour is one of the best bakeries in the GTA for fresh, artisan bread. The entire process is Canadian from start to finish. Grain is harvested in Manitoba, then milled in-house at the Liberty Village location. The result? Bread that is less processed and more nutrient-dense than what you find at most shops.
Ancient and heritage grains go into every loaf — from whites and ryes to challah, English muffins, and pizza dough. Beyond bread, the bakery serves pastries and made-to-order toasts and sandwiches for breakfast and lunch. You can also find their flour and fresh loaves at select local grocers. Find a Brodflour stockist near you.
2. Croissants: Fleur du Jour, Wychwood
Fleur du Jour is a classic French patisserie in Toronto’s Wychwood neighbourhood. Everything is made from scratch each morning, and the doors close once they sell out. The menu features 18 varieties of viennoiserie — layered breakfast pastries from laminated dough — including 7 types of proper croissant. Customers call them “heavenly tender” and “absolutely delicious.”
This bakery also turns out stunning patisserie items, and almost all of them are gluten free. Fleur du Jour has been featured in Toronto Life Magazine and reviewed by both BlogTO and French-language radio station CHOQ FM 105.1. Check out their full menu here.
3. Buns: Bà Nôi, Koreatown
Bà Nôi is a small, casual takeout spot in Koreatown — and one of the most unique bakeries in the GTA. It stands out for its sweet and savoury milk buns, made with a Vietnamese influence. The bakery is named after the owner’s grandmother. Alongside the signature buns, the menu includes Canadian classics like chocolate chip cookies (loaded with big chunks and flaky sea salt) and golden-brown butter tarts.
The spot also serves galettes with sweet or savoury fillings, plus coffee. It’s easy to walk past without noticing — but regulars say the quality is among the very best in Toronto. Find the address here so you don’t miss it.
4. Bagels: Gryfe’s, Lawrence Manor
Gryfe’s Bagelry in Lawrence Manor has been a Toronto institution since 1915. Not a New York bagel, and not a Montreal bagel — a Gryfe’s bagel is its own thing. Light and fluffy with a thin, crisp crust, it has kept loyal customers coming back for generations. Jewish Romanian immigrant Schlome “Sam” Gryfe built the original recipe from scratch and brought his siblings in to help run the shop.
Sam’s recipe still runs the kitchen today. Gryfe’s carries all the classic bagel flavours, plus pizza bagels, challah, sandwiches, and chocolate chip cookies — all at great prices. The store was recently renovated but kept its classic look. You can now subscribe to get fresh bagels delivered on a recurring schedule. Find a Gryfe’s location near you.
5. Sit-Down Experience: Serano Café, East York
For a full bakery experience, head to Serano Café in East York. It is the sister location of Serano Bakery — one of the highest-rated bakeries in the Greater Toronto Area on Google. The menu focuses on Greek pies, pastries, breads, gelato, and fresh coffee. Standout items include filled donuts, cheesecake slices, bougatsa, tsoureki, and spanakopita.
Serano Café has lots of seating, with shaded patio tables in summer. Reviewers love it for people-watching over a meal, snack, or coffee. The location is lively and usually has a special on the menu. Whether you want something sweet, savoury, or both — it delivers. See the full Serano Café menu here.
Whether you’re chasing the best sourdough in the GTA, hunting for the perfect croissant in Toronto, or craving a classic bagel, these five bakeries are worth the trip. Bookmark this guide and work your way through them all.
