1. Chicken Parmigiana, from Empire Provisions

More than a sandwich counter, Empire Provisions is a butchery, café, and specialty grocery carrying snacks, antipasto, sauces & dips, prepared food, alcohol and products from local Calgary brands. You’ll struggle to choose from their sandwich menu, which features deli delights like porchetta, meatballs, sausage and pastrami. The Chicken Parmigiana might still take the cake. There is also a celebrated grilled cheese for those who don’t eat meat.

2. Tuna Melt, from Alumni Sandwiches

That’s right. Alumni dresses up even a basic tuna melt with fresh vegetables and acidy fixings. The sandwich hovel has a classic diner-style vibe, and specializes in briney and marinated ingredients which elevate fan favourites like Mexican Tortas, Rosemary Beef Dip sandwiches, Reubens and Meatball Subs. They also serve cocktails!

3. Italiana Combo, from Scozzafava’s Deli

“Hot salami, mortadella, hot capicolo, fior di latte, roasted red pepper, dressed arugula, calabrian chilli spread, pesto” 

Scozzafava’s has classic Italian-style subs served on sesame seed buns as well as salads, a soup of the day, mozzarella sticks, coffee, cannolis and cocktails. With two meats and two cheeses, the Italian Combo is sure to fulfill your deli counter craving; and if not, they also have some pretty insane sandwiches on special. Located right on 17th Ave SW, this place can get packed. Bring a friend to enjoy casual lunch, or come at night time when they host local bands and DJs!

4. Burgundy Dip, from Bonjour!

“Beef brisket, comté, mushroom, onions, parsley with side of jus”

Bonjour! on 34th Ave is inspired by both French and Italian sandwiches, with half their menu on baguette, and the other on schiacciata. The Burgundy Dip is French-style on crispy baguette that you dip in the beef jus. You can also build your own sandwiches here, with the option to make them vegetarian or gluten free. Bonjour also makes their own pickles and beignets, and carries canned craft beer and French soda.

5. Mama’s Meatloaf, from Spolumbo’s Fine Foods and Deli

“Served Thursday to Saturday. A fresh homemade blend of our pork sausage and ham with Mama’s special touch. Prepared on a Kaiser bun with mustard, mayo, lettuce, and tomato”

A 36-year-old family business in Calgary, Spolumbo’s is a beloved hang out spot in the Inglewood neighbourhood whose walls are covered with jerseys and sports memorabilia. The Mama’s Meatloaf Panini combines beef meatloaf made earlier in the week with sausage and ham. Try the variety made with turkey meatloaf if you’re feeling healthy. Spolumbo’s also has breakfast and desserts, caters, and holds events for holidays and in partnership with other local businesses.

6. The Guacamolic, from Egg Club

“Avocado, Double Guacamole, Egg Club Sauce”

Egg Club started in Toronto, but now has two popular Calgary locations: one in Downtown and the other on MacLeod Trail. Their whole concept is scrambled eggs between pieces of Japanese style fluffy milk bread with a special Egg Club sauce. However, the large variety of toppings– from simple caramelized onion, to rich lobster or creamy street corn– make each of their signature sandwiches unique. The Guacamolic fuses the egg sandwich and avocado toast into one closed-face delight.
